At-Risk Youth

The Challenge Adventures founders have lengthy experience in the community and in the wilderness working with children who are victims of sexual and physical abuse, children with behavioral disorders, children from economically deprived backgrounds, children with special needs, adjudicated youth and other at-risk populations. Challenge Adventures trips are generally more short-term than traditional "wilderness therapy" programs, but some of the same benefits can apply, considering the shorter time frame. Work with at-risk populations will require close coordination with sponsoring organizations, particularly about screening criteria. Please contact our office to tell us about your needs.

For at-risk youth, the trip usually includes more structure and close monitoring of student behavior. In addition to following group rules, each camper may be expected to have some individual behavior goals. These details will be worked out with the sponsoring organization ahead of time.

Funding: Challenge Adventures staff will work with sponsoring organizations to seek funding for their youth to participate in a wilderness adventure trip. This assistance may include mutual grant-seeking, advice on where to request local sources of funds, or support for local fund-raising projects. If sponsoring organization staff are willing to invest the time and energy to seek funding, our staff will provide you the expertise and support.
