Persons with Developmental Disabilities
Fun, recreation and improved self-confidence are only a few of the ways persons with developmental disabilities can benefit from going on an adventure llama trek with us. We have the qualifications and experience to make these experiences successful for the participants. For two summers, we provided adventure trips for a residential home for young men with developmental disabilities. We have taken out community groups that serve persons with developmental disabilities and we have provided family treks that included persons with developmental disabilities.
The llamas are especially sensitive to individuals who are vulnerable and are very easy for anyone to lead or talk to. We allow campers to approach the llamas at their own pace and find that they are soon fast friends. During the treks, participants learn to trust and rely on "their llama" and gain outdoor skills that can enlarge their world. They attain the pride that comes with real accomplishment.
During the planning stages for an adventure trip, we work closely with staff of the sponsoring organization to learn about participants' individual needs. We require a high staff or volunteer ratio to assure each camper's success. For most of these groups, we require that each camper have a "buddy" accompany them on the trip, which can be a volunteer or family member. Some groups may require or request one or more camper orientation sessions ahead of the trip, which can be arranged. Please contact us for details.
Funding: We recognize that government and other funding is not widely available to support such experiences for persons who may benefit most. Therefore, we work in concert with the sponsoring community organization or school to seek funding together, such as grants, local funding or fund-raising projects. We will work with your staff to find ways to make a llama adventure experience possible for your clients. Call us at 803-771-6663 or toll-free at 1-866-660-8090 to talk about the details.
