Fun and Personal Growth
Each trek focuses on fun and safety but also teaches participants outdoor skills and respect for the environment. Some of the best learning and personal growth takes place through experiential learning, a process through which participants develop knowledge, skills and values directly from their experiences.
Some Benefits of Getting Young People Outdoors:
We can provide recreational and personal growth trips for women and girls, community youth groups, persons with developmental disabilities and others. Individuals with limited experience in the out of doors may be reluctant to undertake a backcountry trek without additional outside and support. That's where Challenge Adventures can help. We provide the guides and the gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.). We teach you how to be comfortable in the woods. Our guides teach outdoor skills in a supportive way and help each person go beyond their perceived limitations. The view from the top of a mountain, sighting a peregrine falcon or finding hidden wildflowers are some of the memories our campers will take home.
We provide llamas to carry the heavy gear and to contribute their own unique character. Each llama has a distinct personality and they inject a note of fun into the expedition. At the campsite, we may even tell some tall tales and sing a few camp songs.
In addition, we have conducted adventure "empowerment" groups for girls and adult women, including all-women's professional groups and work teams. We believe that meeting the challenge of hiking and camping in the wilderness can build confidence and self-esteem. Our job is to provide the experienced guides, equipment and social support for women and girls to make these accomplishments possible. We encourage teamwork, giving and asking for help, to make the adventure both an individual and a group achievement.
During one of the first all-women's groups we conducted, one participant was a successful professional therapist, but she was fearful about crossing a small stream that lay along the trail. Even more, she was reluctant to ask anyone to help her. The group spent some time talking through this block before she asked for and accepted physical and emotional support to get across the creek on stepping stones. Another woman was worried about sleeping in a tent, "away from walls and doors with locks." Several others joined in the conversation about feeling vulnerable in the woods and what might help them overcome this reaction. Another woman was recovering from a recent illness and wanted to feel more confident in her physical abilities. During three days on the trail, these women gained real outdoor skills and built confidence by overcoming physical and emotional barriers.
Other women's groups over the years have had similar experiences, focusing on growth, teamwork and other issues important to them. They rediscovered parts of themselves. In addition, they laughed, shared stories and had fun. Dancing barefoot in the rain can be a liberating experience you might not do in your front yard at home.
