Age: We generally work with youth between 8 - 13 years old. Programs can be conducted for adult women's groups and for persons with developmental disabilities age 8 and up.
Group size: No more than 16 total, including one adult chaperone per seven youth and 1-2 of our guides. These groups can go into the National Forest. Groups of ten or fewer may go into more remote and less traveled Wilderness Areas.
Staff: Staff are experienced adults who are certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Program founders and most trip guides have master's degrees and are licensed social workers or certified teachers.
Duration: Trips range from a day hike to 3-5 days in the backcountry (including overnight camping in tents), depending on the participants and your desired outcomes. The program operates primarily during the summer months, with limited weekend bookings available in spring and fall.
Gear: All food and gear for participants are provided (such as tents, sleeping bags, ground pads, backpacks, water bottles, mess kits, stoves, etc.). Girl Scout groups must provide their own backpacks, water bottles, mess kits, ground pads and sleeping bags. For Scouts, we provide tents and stoves. Everyone is required to wear/bring appropriate clothing and shoes or boots as listed on the recommended clothing list (PDF) and the season of the year.
Transportation: Groups are responsible for their own transportation to and from the trailhead. (Click here for directions to Black Balsam parking area). The trailhead is off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville, NC. You will be given detailed directions upon confirmation.
