Program Philosophy
Challenge Adventures helps individuals to learn and grow by participating in outdoor experiences that build teamwork and self confidence. We believe that meeting the physical and emotional challenges of an outdoor adventure provides many benefits for persons of all ages and abilities. Our experienced staff facilitate these experiences in a positive and supportive manner so that participants can set personal goals and achieve success. Our philosophy is based in a belief that cooperation and caring create success for all.
For youth, we have a firm, but positive approach that is founded on natural consequences and an expectation of each individual's success. We believe that outdoor experiences, structure, and healthy, supportive adult guidance can help all young people learn and grow, especially those who are experiencing problems or challenges. For individuals who have limited experience in the out of doors, such as women and girls, persons with developmental disabilities, and others, we provide supportive outdoor experiences that contribute to learning, confidence and personal growth.
Our approach is based on the belief that young people need to form concepts of accomplishment, belonging, responsibility and leadership, to prepare them for success in life. We facilitate young people in meeting these developmental tasks. The method we use most frequently is a wilderness journey, aided by pack llamas.
The wilderness journey teaches:
The Challenge Adventures founders are experienced master's level social workers who have additional training in group facilitation, wilderness procedures and working with youth. Most field staff or guides are mature people with master's degrees.
