Women and Girls
Challenge Adventures celebrates the accomplishments of women and girls. We do this by providing wilderness treks that reinforce a sense of accomplishment, belonging, responsibility, and leadership. Our adventure treks are fun and they also are chance to learn and grow. Our unique program includes llamas as assistants and trail companions.
We have worked especially hard with groups of young girls, eight to 13, who have been victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, crime, neglect, economic deprivation and similar difficulties. These girls come to us from organizations that are already serving them and that believe we can help to give the girls something they can't get elsewhere. The combination of being in the wilderness, carrying out the responsibilities that are a part of life there, being part of a group, the nurturing from the adults and the relationship with the llamas creates a unique opportunity for the girls. In the wilderness they are completely away from all of their previous experiences and can become empowered in part because of the experiences they are undergoing and in part because there are none of the distractions that keep them from doing so in their usual environment.
In addition, we have conducted adventure "empowerment" groups for girls and adult women, including all-women's professional groups and work teams. We believe that meeting the challenge of hiking and camping in the wilderness can build confidence and self-esteem. Our job is to provide the experienced guides, equipment and social support for women and girls to make these accomplishments possible. We encourage teamwork, giving and asking for help, to make the adventure both an individual and a group achievement.
